Sofa furniture is patterned after the armchair but has a seat long enough for two or more people and perhaps Fido too. Originally designed in the late 18th century, sofas exploded in popularity during the 1800's up through the Victorian period. It was during this time that no home or parlor was considered properly furnished without a sofa. Also referred to as a couch or chesterfield, it seems no home is without one. All sofa couches are upholstered with exposed legs, usually of wood. This is the defining characteristic of couch furniture. Perhaps, but not necessarily, there are exposed parts of the frame, especially including the back and/or arms. As with most furniture today, home sofa furniture comes in a style and color to suit any decor. Couches are de rigueur pieces found in any room of today's homes where seating family and guests is required.
