Iron Beds Buying Guide

Learn the difference between Discount Metal Beds, Standard Iron Beds and Premium Iron Beds.

Discount Metal Beds
Discount metal beds are typically made of a fairly light guage of tubular steel. While tubular steel can still be quite strong and should last for many years, the weight of the bed is far less than Standard or Premium Grade Iron Beds. If you were to flick your fingernail against a discount grade metal bed, it would make a shiny high pitch sound. Considering headboards and footboards are primarily for decorative purposes since the entire wieght of the mattress is supported by the metal bed frame, discount metal beds are a good economical choice for many because the price is far less than Standard or Premium Iron Beds. Many of the discount metal beds still come with a 10 year warranty so we do have confidence that they should last.

Standard Iron Beds
Standard iron beds are the most populor choice for iron bed consumers because they look very similar to premium cast iron beds yet are more affordable. Standard cast iron beds should easily last a decade or much more where premium cast iron beds should last multiple lifetimes. The straight bars and spindles are made of a heavier guage of steel and often include decorative cast iron to connect the bars and on the finials of the bed posts. Artists create a design with relentless passion and once they feel it is perfect, they literally make the mold. Because cast iron furniture is produced by pouring melted iron and other metals into a power injection cast mold. Every piece is detailed to perfection and very durable. Cast iron is sometimes poured by hand but is most often mass-produced by machine, making cast iron and steel furniture very affordable. Keep in mind that even the very highest quality iron beds typically use steel for the posts and straight spindles. The guage of steel and the amount of cast iron is the important concern and Standard Cast Iron Beds have a much heavier guage of steel than discount iron beds. Standard cast iron beds are still quite affordable and are plenty strong to last for many, many years.

Premium Iron Beds
If you are primarily concerned with quality and are willing to pay a little more for a bed that will last a lifetime or even multiple generations, we suggest our premium cast iron beds. Premium cast iron beds use an extemely heavy guage of steel for the posts and spindles and includes typically has cast iron moldings to connect the bars and on the finials at the top of the bed posts. For some, premium quality cast iron beds are simply over the top to more than they are willing to pay for an iron bed. At the same time, many people really want a superior quality iron bed as a family heirloom that is sure to become an antique. All of the iron beds that say "by Wesley Allen" would fall into this category.
